Dev Blog Update #17

It’s been a while since I’ve talked about the goings on of the site!

Advertisments

I’ve signed up to Google Adsense in hopes of chipping away at the cost of hosting Crazy Sunshine.

Most viewers will probably block these ads, but after some calibration they will start displaying things that might interest you!

Stuff like videogames, comics and computer-related stuff if you are into that.

Porn if not, probably.

Give them a click if they look interesting!

They are centered around location, so I can only really monitor what is displayed in Japan at the moment.

If anything weird shows up, let me know!

Tags & archiving

I’ve disabled tags within comics and instead added a new, awesome Comicpress feature that allows you to view comic archives based on more comic-related, specific tags.

You’ll find them underneath each comic.

Currently you can view archives based on:

  • Story arc
  • Location
  • Characters

It took a while to go through all the old comics, so give me a shout if there’s anything or anyone I’ve missed!

Comic

A constant growing concern of mine is how long ORIGINS is taking to finish.

The current chapter, Install, is almost over, and there’s four more chapters still to go.

I want to keep these remaining chapters as short as possible because my real life is about to get a heck of a lot busier, so I hope you understand!

I feel like ORIGINS was too big of a project to pull off in the middle of my time here in Japan.

I feel like I’ve bitten off more than I can chew, and wasted my chance at enjoying living in another country.

Personally, I think the entire storyline up until the end of Install is utterly boring and sadly feel like I have completely wasted my time spending every hour of my free time drawing and writing it up.

I am in no way fishing for compliments, but with only half the storyline finished over the course of an entire year, combined with the reduced amount of readers to the site has shot my motivation and left me feeling like I’ve let everyone down, including the characters and world that has taken years of my life to build up!

I’m going to try and keep blasting out whatever I can this year, and once I move back to making gag strips, I fully expect to only have about five readers left.

But that’s okay!

ORIGINS was just one of the many stories I want to tell, and once it’s over, it’s over.

I just hope those of you who did enjoy the ride will stick around!

Thanks for reading!

  1. Ever since I came across your comic I have been an avid reader. I liked the funnies and am liking even more the story. I love the feel of humour you put in through the drawing. Thank you for all you have done so far and I hope your life enables you to not only keep it going but also to enjoy doing it!

  2. Ads are no big thing as long as you don’t allow some of the loud or obnoxious kind on the site. I disable adblock on the webcomic sites I frequent just to support the artist. Keep up the good work and hope to see a lot more awesome out of you.

    1. Thanks a ton! I keep mine out of the way which is not really a good thing when it comes to making money, but I’m not a big fan of stuff that messes up the site layout.

  3. I would like to see the remaing storyline of ORIGINS, i enjoyed it so far and I’m curious to see how Lacie and Shelbie entered the story. Please go on like you mentioned before, to first finish ORIGINS, I can’t wait to see it. Also with the depth the characters will have until then, the gag strips will propably be even more fun because you’ll might have more possibilities to invent gags (insiders e.g.)

If you’re right (and in this case I am sure you’re not ^^) and there will be just five readers left, I sure be one of them!
Keep your chin up Jkun, your work is splendid and we all appreciate it!

btw: Did I ever mentioned i love scottish whisky (Auchentoshan especially) and I will pay Scotland a visit in the next couple of years? ;)

btw2.: sry for my bad english, it’s not my mother tongue.

    1. It’s ok, your English is fine!

I agree, the point of ORIGINS was so I could expand on the gags once the story is over, and focus on developing character relationships like Lacie/Shelbie and furthering Candy/peppermint now readers will know what happened in the past.

Whisky is great! If you go visit make sure to drop into a castle or two :o Stirling Castle is near where I used to live, it’s lovely when the weather isn’t crappy (which is most of the time…)

      1. Ok, I’ll keep it in mind when I’m there. I want to go by motorcycle, I hope the weather is not that crappy…

  4. If you miss making gag strips but don’t want to drop the ORIGINS meta-arc, why not alternate between the two? One chapter of ORIGINS, some gag strips, another chapter of ORIGINS, some more gag strips, and so on …

Sure, this would drag out ORIGINS publication over an even longer time period, but it might turn out refreshing and fun. Alternating between gag strips and story-driven short or long arcs has worked splendid for some of my favourite web comics like ‘Shortpacked!’ and ‘Sandra and Woo’.

    1. A lot of people bring this up, and I would love to, I really would, but I can’t keep putting off ORIGINS like that. My job’s contract is up in a year and unless I buckle down and tie up loose ends like ORIGINS before I go looking for a new job or eventually run out of money to pay for hosting I would never forgive myself. I would rather see ORIGINS done and dusted should the inevitable happen rather than leaving it unfinished.

From an archive point of view too, it would be messy. The timeline is already fucked up enough with the character redesigns, and suddenly going back to comedy after a year of storytelling won’t help.
