So, SEGA finally revealed Sonic Boom after months of fans staring at silhouettes of our favourite four characters. Here’s the skinny and some short, personal thoughts on it!
Okay, so, Sonic Boom is a new branch of the Sonic universe, featuring a (currently) Nintendo exclusive game, 52 episode 11 minute TV series to be aired on Cartoon Network, and toy line by Tomy. It focuses on a completely redesigned Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy as they thwart Eggman’s plans once again in a completely new and mysterious world.
The character designs have been completely revamped with an incredibly unique “adventurer” style. Sonic’s been given extra quills and his arms now match the colour of his legs, Tails has donned some interesting (and probably self-created) gadgets, Amy has changed her floppy dress for something a bit more adult and sexy, and Knuckles has taken one too many steroids.
While fans are already slating these new design changes, most are forgetting this is simply a new Sonic universe. Much like SatAM’s sinister Robotnik, or Sonic Underground’s dreadful choice at voice acting, Sonic Boom is simply another spin on the beloved franchise, and should be regarded as such. Personally I think, much like the art style, it’s quite an adventurous leap for SEGA to take, but then again, when have SEGA ever just sat back and released the same type of game over and over again? Never. Thanks goodness too, because another Sonic ’06 would put me in the hospital.
The series boasts it will be a “comedic ensemble”, and going by the TV Series trailer, it might actually be worth a look, even if you’re not a fan of the famous blue blur. As for the game, while the new designs and gameplay mechanics might alienate classic followers of the franchise, they could usher in a new age of fans and put Sonic triumphantly back on the radar!
